Policy Brief: A Closer Look at Secret Ballot Union Certification Votes
On May 17, 2016 the Manning Centre released a report that looked into data from over 1,000 secret ballot union certification votes from British Columbia, Alberta, Manitoba, Newfoundland and Labrador, and New Brunswick (period: 2009 - 2015).
The data showed workers could be adversely impacted by the federal government’s plan to get rid of secret ballot votes when workers have to decide if they want to unionize (in workplaces covered under federal labour legislation). Numerous instances of unions claiming high levels of support, only to see support plummet once workers could vote through a secret ballot, were examined.
